A Comparison with Mallorca

A Comparison with Mallorca

Tenerife vs Mallorca
Whilst Mallorca remains an ever-popular winter/spring cycle training destination, for many professional and amateur riders, Tenerife has been steadily growing in popularity over recent years, as the cycling world wakes up to its fantastic offering.

It’s hard to get the road miles in when it’s consistently cold and wet outside, so, it’s worth considering a few hard facts when selecting a warm weather training destination. Did you know, for example, that Tenerife shares the same latitude as California, whereas Mallorca is more or less on par with New York. A further comparison of average climate information (for February / March) paints a similar picture:

Statistic TENERIFE MALLORCA
Average DAILY temperature 21ºC 11ºC
Average LOW Temperature 16ºC 7ºC
Average Number of Rainy Days (per MONTH) 2 8
Average Monthly Rainfall 10 mm 40 mm
Maximum altitude 3,718 m 1,445 m
Average sea water temperature 18ºC 13ºC
Price of a cool beer 1,20 € 2,50 €

So in summary, here’s why you should take a winter training break in Tenerife with TBT:

  • Tenerife is warmer and sunnier than mainland Europe & the Balearic Islands.
  • We have the highest mountain in Spain – El Teide – so you can sleep and train at altitude.
  • El Teide’s ‘Sea of Clouds’ is a beautiful natural phenomenon – come and see for yourself!
  • Every ride features spectacular views – much better than looking at your garage wall on your turbo trainer!
  • The island is large enough to offer a great variety of riding environments, making each day a unique experience…..
  • ……but small enough that you’re likely to bump into pro-riders, training or perhaps having coffee at a road-side cafe.
  • The road surfaces are mostly smooth and well-maintained – great for those long ascents and descents.
  • Local cuisine is some of the best in Spain – we guarantee you will love Mama’s paella!
  • Tenerife is an incredibly friendly island, just waiting to welcome you.

If you still need convincing, consider 3 simple questions…….

Q1: In how many places in Europe can you ride at over 2,000m?
A1: Of course there are many places – Alps, Dolomites, Pyrenees etc.

Q2: But in how many of those places is it possible to ride from sea-level to 2,350m in a continuous 40km route?
A2: That probably narrows it down to only a few places, but Tenerife makes that short-list.

Q3: In how many of those few places can you ride at this altitude during all 12 months of the year?
A3: There is only one place and by now you should be able to guess where!
